Job Summary

AECOM is actively seeking a creative, highly talented Water/Wastewater Project Engineer for immediate employment in the Charlotte, NC office.

To support various projects for municipal, State, Federal and private clients with an emphasis on conveyance and pumping systems. Candidate will perform a variety of tasks, including but not limited to, site investigations, field measurements, existing utility investigations, conveyance design, hydraulic modeling, capacity studies, condition assessments, environmental permitting, lift station evaluation/design, construction administration and observation. The candidate will provide engineering design and construction drawings using AutoCAD Civil 3D. Additional responsibilities include utilization of GIS software tools to manage and analyze data, report preparation, and maintaining the required AECOM-related documentation and forms. The candidate will work on projects from the planning and detailed design phase and through permitting and construction phase. The successful candidate will have ample opportunities to develop professionally through frequent collaboration with senior engineers, project manager, clients, regulatory agencies, and industry-leading senior team members.

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Utilizes basic engineering principles, judgement, theories, practices, and existing technologies to develop solutions for technical problems with limited scope

  • Gathers and correlates basic engineering data using established and well-defined procedures and practices

  • Works on routine or detailed engineering assignments involving calculations and engineering analysis

  • Performs work in accordance with agreed upon budget and schedule with little supervision

  • Proposes approaches to solve new problems

  • Identifies discrepancies in outcomes, results, and analysis of engineering tasks

  • Provides guidance to entry-level engineers

  • Software use includes, but is not limited to: AutoCAD Civil 3D, ArcGIS, Microsoft Office, etc

  • Record and interpret data, conduct analyses, compare findings to relevant studies and local, state, and federal regulations to ensure compliance

  • Perform site visits and field observations during construction

  • Determines permitting requirements and prepares submittal packages to governing agencies

  • Work under supervision of a senior project manager in the water/wastewater practice or senior level team members

  • Able to conduct occasional field work, tolerate variable environmental conditions, walk on uneven surfaces, and lift and carry at least 50 pounds, when needed

  • Occasional business travel of one to four days per month may be required

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering or related discipline

  • 4 years of related experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education

  • U.S. Citizenship is required (due to the nature of the projects)

  • Must be a licensed Professional Engineer

  • Must have a minimum of 1 year experience in the planning, permitting, and design of water and wastewater conveyance projects

  • Experience in task management or project management

  • Minimum of 1 year experience in generating pipeline construction drawings and plans in AutoCAD Civil3D

  • Must possess a valid drivers license

Preferred Qualifications

  • Must be a licensed Professional Engineer in North Carolina or have the ability to obtain licensure through reciprocity within 6 months of employment

  • Masters Degree in Civil/Environmental Engineer a plus

  • 5 years of progressive experience with municipal water/wastewater conveyance and pumping engineering, design and permitting

  • Must have demonstrated time management skills, work ethic and attention to detail.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Must have the ability to communicate and coordinate effectively with technicians, designers, engineers, and project managers for the preparation of high-quality work products

  • Must have the ability to communicate and coordinate with clients, subconsultants, regulatory agencies, and members of the public as may be necessary to accomplish assigned objectives

  • Works collaboratively in teams and independently when necessary

  • Experience designing large diameter pipeline projects

  • Experience working on alternative delivery projects (design-build, progressive design-build, construction management-at-risk, etc.) or treatment plant projects a plus

  • Experience supporting development of engineering proposals (scope of work descriptions, estimating hours, etc.)

  • Experience with ESRI suite of GIS software products including ArcMap, ArcCatalog, and ArcToolbox

  • Ability to train and coach entry-level engineers and technicians in AutoCAD Civil 3D, ArcMap, and other engineering applications

  • MicroStation Geopak Water-Sewer design experience

  • Innovyze InfoWater and or InfoWorks ICM modeling experience
