**Role Summary**

We are looking for collaborative and innovative team members who will help us significantly transform our ability to understand diseases across all stages of drug development and help accelerate our ability to bring breakthroughs that impact patients' lives. The Director, Epidemiologic Methods position provides an opportunity for an experienced epidemiologist to play an essential role in transforming the generation of real-world evidence and its application to drug development. This role requires someone with strong technical expertise, analytic ability, creativity and communication skills. The Epidemiology Methods Scientist will contribute thought leadership regarding the application of fit-for-purpose non-interventional study designs to support epidemiological benefit-risk assessments across portfolios and stages of development.

The Epidemiology Methods Scientist will report directly to the Global Medical Epidemiology and Big Data Analysis, Methods COE Lead, based in New York.

**Role Responsibilities**

Commensurate with experience and skills, support Global Medical Epidemiology and Big Data Analytics deliverables by providing input and expertise on epidemiologic and scientific methods in order to:

+ Design rigorous epidemiologic studies to generate real world evidence of safety and effectiveness of therapies across multiple disease areas using a variety of primary and secondary real-world data sources

+ Articulate research questions and study objectives to support real-world evidence generation strategies

+ Persuasively and concisely communicate strengths and limitations of epidemiologic study designs to a variety of stakeholders including regulatory agencies, health care professionals, clinical and pre-clinical researchers, regulatory strategists, and vendors

+ Determine feasibility of data sources for meeting study objectives

+ Identify and evaluate innovative methods for real world evidence generation to support enterprise from early clinical development (e.g., natural history of disease) to clinical development (e.g., external/synthetic controls) post-authorization studies (e.g., direct comparative studies)

+ Critically assess real-world evidence generation proposals and publications

+ Determine robust estimates of disease incidence and prevalence across a variety of complex disorders using real-world data sources

+ Validate algorithms used for defining patient segments, clinical and treatment history, comorbidities, and safety and effectiveness outcomes

+ Present and publish real-world evidence at scientific conferences and peer-reviewed journals

+ Interact and negotiate with regulatory agencies on epidemiologic issues as needed, via written and/or verbal communications

+ Support multiple product teams on epidemiology related issues

EPI/RWE Expertise

+ Contribute expertise in epidemiology methods, including observational and experimental RWD/RWE study designs and analysis

+ Negotiate non-interventional study designs with regulatory agencies

+ Educate stakeholders on strengths and limitations of common real-world data sources and approaches for real world data linkages

+ Effectively communicate complex study methods and results through presentations and publications

+ Negotiate scientific and operational decisions with cross-functional teams, external collaborators, and regulators

+ Support and attendance Advisory Committee meetings/Oral explanations with regulatory agencies

Education & Communication


+ Educate Pfizer stakeholders of strengths and limitations of innovative and established epidemiology methods and demonstrate benefit of for fit-for-purpose methods

+ Collaborate across Pfizer with real-world data researchers to advance epidemiologic science.


+ Influence the external environment as a public spokesperson and demonstrated leader (e.g., leadership and membership in PhRMA, ISPE or other scientific bodies, scientific presentations and publications)

+ Publish and present RWD/RWE projects at internal meetings, and external industry conference/workshops

+ Maintain an extensive understanding of external environment and advances in RWD applications and methods

**Basic Qualifications**

+ Doctorate degree (PhD or DrPH), and 5+ years of experience in Epidemiology, Quantitative Public Health discipline, or related discipline

+ History of implementing innovative or creative solutions to scientific questions

+ Interpersonal and communication skills to negotiate business and scientific issues and collaboration across diverse stakeholders

+ Candidate demonstrates a breadth of diverse leadership experiences and capabilities including: the ability to influence and collaborate with peers, develop and coach others, oversee and guide the work of other colleagues to achieve meaningful outcomes and create business impact

**Preferred Qualifications**

+ Strong preference for 3 or more years' experience in the pharmaceutical industry; with track record of interacting with regulatory agencies

+ Consulting or industry experience in RWE generation a plus

+ Proven success defending study designs and real-world evidence with regulators

+ Extensive expertise in RWD/RWE

+ Strong decision-making skills

+ Excellent matrix, interpersonal and influencing skills

+ Excellent verbal and written communications skills

+ Strong desire to reach challenging goals and continuously improve

+ Works tenaciously through difficulties to achieve best results

+ Peer reviewed publications on theoretical or methodological epidemiology
