Oversee the Innovation Unit Strategic Space plan (IU SSP), ensure projects are executed in alignment with the IU SSP and complete assigned projects to enable the IU to reach its Research and Development goals.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Maintain, revise and direct the implementation of the IU SSP, as required to meet the current and future IU Strategy.  Ensure new projects are in alignment with the IU SSP
  • Serve as Project Lead for projects falling under the IU SSP ensuring continuity within the program
  • Develop and maintain budgets and schedule for IU SSP projects with individual project managers
  • Present projects for approval by Local Capital Committee (LCC), appropriate Capital Investment Committee (CIC) and Capital Expenditure Management Committee (CEMCom)
  • Serve as Lead for IU capital project Peer Reviews
  • For assigned projects:
    • Provide project management services for assigned capital projects including feasibility studies, preparation of investment applications (RCPA’s) to secure funding, design development, construction document preparation, Architectural/Engineering (A/E), Construction Manager (CM) and General Contractor (GC) evaluation and selection, bids solicitation and review, contract administration, overall construction management, commissioning, validation and startup.
    • Develop, review and establish Basis of Design criteria with user department management
    • Provide coordination of outside design firms during preliminary and detailed project planning activities.  Perform value engineering analysis and comparisons for conformance to Basis of Design criteria and industry accepted engineering standards.
    • Develop project budgets and schedules, review engineering drawings.  Provide technical support to operating units, as requested.
    • Inspect construction in-progress, track costs for budget conformance, approve progress payment and change orders, monitor schedule and contract document conformance.  Provide project report on a monthly and quarterly basis documenting status of aforementioned activities.
    • Define scope and implement project feasibility studies.
    • Ensure proper closeout of project including all project documentation, financial aspects, lien releases, and facility engineering interface. 
  • Manage or direct operational, administrative, maintenance or other related programs and tasks as assigned. An example of an operational program is responsibility for managing the insurance requirements or fire protection system.
  • As project lead for the IU SSP manage the relationship with A&E and Construction Management firms; establish communication, oversight and feedback processes to ensure all projects are implemented according to budget and schedule; and ensure work is performed in alignment with BI CapEx and safety/environmental management systems.


  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution required with a focus in Engineering, Construction Management or Architecture preferred
  • Master’s or MBA preferred.
  • Minimum of fifteen (15) years of experience in project management/facility operations in a pharmaceutical or related industry with strong, demonstrated leadership experience in laboratory and vivarium design, construction and facility operation. 
  • Communicates clearly and effectively at all organizational levels, including Corporate colleagues
  • Strong influencing and people management skills; the ability to influence without authority 
  • Demonstrated strategic thinking, strong project management and organizational skills to keep track of a large amount of constantly changing information and simultaneous competing priorities to achieve results
  • Excellent technical understanding of the CapEx process, R&D facility, ISEE pathways, processes and abilities and the IU organization
  • Experience managing A/E firms
  • Strong knowledge of costs to develop high level cost estimates for planning purposes
  • Ability to gather/define/document user needs to produce the best overall plan and develop strategies to meet them while keeping the big picture in mind
  • Strong collaboration and coordination skills with a high level of emotional intelligence to maintain good relations with stakeholders
  • Ability to effectively interact and communicate across all levels of the IU organization, especially senior management, while influencing without authority
  • Ability to plan and organize multiple work streams that change regularly (Agility and Flexibility)
